The 143rd Running of the Kentucky Derby

by David Kastan May 03, 2017

Pomp and pageantry return to Louisville, Kentucky for the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby. It's a very exciting time of year to be in Louisville, and even with a less than stellar weather forecast excitement is already starting to build in and around the city. Along with the Run for the Roses, lovingly referred to as the fastest 2 minutes in sports, the city is a buzz with many Derby Festival events that start today.

Wednesday is the Great Steamboat Race, where the classic steamers..the Belle of Louisville and the Belle of Cincinnati, duke it out for the Golden Antlers.

Thursday brings the Pegasus Parade. The parade marches down Broadway in Louisville and is a crowd favorite for locals.

Friday will be the 143rd Running of the Kentucky Oaks. This race is for the fillies, but locals here call the day "Louisville's day at the races".

Then of course the big show will be Saturday as Churchill Downs hosts the Kentucky Derby. Post positions and odds were announced this morning and are below.
