The University of Missouri mascot, or "Truman the Tiger", was adopted as the football team's mascot in 1890. At the time, he was just "Tiger" and was named in recognition of the Civil Ware era militia, The Missouri Tigers. The school held a contest in 1984 to give "Tiger" a name, and the contest winner proposed the name "Truman" in honor of Missouri born U.S. President Harry S. Truman.
